I’m a pretty positive person but all you have to do is turn on the news to see how quickly life can catch you and blindside you.  You are cruising along, everything seems fine – in fact great, then boom, your world crashes and you are faced with some major financial stressors.  If that has happened to you or if you just want to be prepared for that possibility, then this article will be of help.

While we are primarily a site that concentrates on moving supplies, such as wardrobe boxes and packing tape, and getting organized such as your closet and garage, real estate and all it’s issues is part of that process as well.  So here is some good info to help you ward off foreclosure. 

If you find yourself caught in a mortgage that you can no longer afford, you may need to find help to prevent foreclosure. The recent subprime mortgage crisis has prompted many local, federal and privately run agencies to develop programs that help to prevent foreclosure. Subprime mortgages are offered to borrowers with a few blemishes on their credit record that can’t qualify for prime rates. Their web site if full of information, tips and advice to help prevent foreclosure. Because you can customize your search based on location, this web site is the most comprehensive place to find the help you are looking for. They also offer counseling by local HUD approved financial counselors. These counselors are able to evaluate your individual situation and make recommendations on their findings. They also provide local resources, such as county specific help to prevent foreclosure.

It is important when faced with a mortgage that you can no longer afford that you seek help to prevent foreclosure early. As there are many programs that have been developed to assist you, many can only be implemented before you get too far behind. Be sure to conduct thorough research before committing to any one program. Finding the help to prevent foreclosure that will suit your situation is possible, but you must be willing to do the research it takes to find it.

The tale of moving boxes, bubblewrap and pig-tails

Well, like most parents, we knew the day would come, and in the next 2-3 months it IS coming. Yes, my daughter will be packing boxes (or will I be packing them? Hmmm!) and moving her stuff to the University of California at Irvine. Yea, she worked hard to get there, she’s scared half to death, but soon she will be off to tackle the (by invitation only) Vocal Performance program, with perhaps a Musical Theatre minor. Ok, enough about her…we all have stories right?

What’s the point? There is no better time than the present to be thinking through your moving needs. How many cardboard moving boxes will your son or daughter need? Bubble wrap too of course, cause then they can entertain themselves and dorm-mates by popping those cute little bubbles for hours when they should be studying. You’ll need box tape, hangers and so much more.

I’m sure you know the routine…just remember to start earlier than you initially expect the process to take. Get organized, and get it all together, then sit back and remember all the fun times – cause these times, “they are a-changing”.

Organize your garage and FEEL GOOD! 

When your garage is clean, efficient and organized, you simply feel good.  FEEL good?  Yes, when you’re garage is a mess, do you feel great?  No, of course not.  But when your bikes, sports equipment, lawn care tools and the like all are in a place that makes sense, you can walk in the garage and do what you need to do with a minimum of fuss. So, if you’re garage is not organized, consider doing it today.

• Driving a moving truck is different…Remember to allow for extra braking room when driving a moving van. Anticipate stops and allow a 3-second gap between you and the vehicle in front of you.
• And again, I remind you that the smallest differences can be huge when drinving a rental moving truck…U-Haul moving vans require up to 12 feet of overhead clearance. Watch out for drive-thru restaurant and motel over-hangs.
• Some Items are simply too important to NOT keep close by to you…Get Organized and take it with you personally…Items of Personal Importance/Sentimental Value – This third category of non-allowables can create problems should your shipment be delayed or items lost. We suggest that irreplaceable items and\or sentimental items be carried with you instead of being packed with your shipment. Moving is a big job, you could even say it’s a huge job by the time you pack them up, box them and then ship them.  But it will be much easier if we spend the time needed to get organized and stay organized – both before we move, as we move and after we arrive at our new home.  And we all know that closets are vitally important to our home life – so get started and organize your closet…

The big “beasts” in our homes are sometimes a bit overwhelming when it comes time to move. But much like everything else you pack up for moving, you take it step by step. Here’s a good start for you!!

Pack small appliances in original container or a moving box cushioned with Packing Paper. (Do not use shredded paper – it can clog the appliance!)With major appliances, check with the appliance dealer for any special moving instructions. For all large appliances, remove loose fittings and accessories and pack separately. Tie down, tape or wedge all movable parts and doors.Gas Dryer – Have gas company disconnect.

Dishwasher/Washing Machine – Stuff towels between machine sides and tub to keep tub from rotating. Pad exterior well. Disconnect hoses, put in plastic bag, place in tub.

Freezer/Refrigerator – Defrost and dry interiors well. Fill interior spaces with lightweight linens, clothing or stuffed toys. If you want to lay your refrigerator down for moving, check first with the local dealer to determine if your brand can be moved like this. If so, make sure refrigerator stands upright for at least 24 hours before plugging in.

GET Organized and get rid of the CLUTTER BEFORE You move!

1. I gave a way a bunch of my stuff when we last moved. One of the local nonprofit groups with a thrift store had a particular day each week they would come to my zip code. They probably thought I was nuts, but I had them put me on the schedule for weeks- the fellows who picked up the usable items would just laugh when they ended up at my house again! I had a spot in the garage for the upstairs gleaning and a spot in the basement for the downstairs. The men could move just about anything cause they were strong and there were 2-3 of them. They also would come right after I finished my yard sales too.Also, I rented a Budget rental truck. Spending money when I had a perfectly good old pickup truck to haul things with goes against my nature, but l the convenience was great. You can also lock them up and put your bigger items like furniture, old appliances, etc, in there too. Then you can hook the thing back onto your car and drive it to its donation destination! Plus, if you are a penny-pincher like me, as each day passes, you know you are paying to keep the rental truck, so it forces you to make up your mind and get the thing filled, emptied and returned to Budget Rental. I may end up doing this again even without moving because despite paring down a bunch with the move, I still kept too much stuff. For the thrift minded after you move, I have seen people advertise all of their moving boxes for sale for a minimal (compared to new) amount, say $30-50 in the classifieds. I would recommend using good moving boxes though – perhaps you can pick up a few produce type boxes from the store, but in many cases, there is simply no substitute for the real moving boxes, do their their strength ratings and specific sizes for books, kitchen dish packs, and wardrobe boxes.
2. One thing that helped me tremendously during moving was a timer. At the time I was totally addicted to chatting on BBS (before internet) and it was almost impossible to drag myself away from the keyboard. I started packing early so I’d have plenty of time. I’d allow myself 30 minutes chatting, 30 minutes packing, 30 minutes chatting, 30 minutes packing…. You know how much you can get done in 5, 10, or 15 minutes already… I got most of the non-essentials (books, china, decorations, etc) packed in a very short time and stacked out of the way against a wall. It was one of the easiest moves that I can remember, clutter and all!
