If it’s spring – it may be time to move.  Americans move constantly it seems – but the good news is that amidst all the hassles of packing up your house, comes a full and huge industry that makes a living by giving you the vey tools you need to lessen your moving hassles. 

Need moving boxes – like disk paks, or boxes for books, wardrobe boxes?  They are readily available!  Need moving supplies like bubble wrap, box tape, wrapping paper,  – oh, those are ready for your purchase – in fact those and so many more moving supplies.  Do you need to rent a truck to move?  Budget rental truck is a leader in the industry.  What about getting organized before you move or organizing your closet and garage at your new home?  Now, those organizing tools – like garage racks and hooks, closet shelves, containers and more are nearly endless.

So if for whatever reason, you find yourself in the midst of moving…realize that though all the work involves can not be removed, yet with a little research, you CAN ease your move and lessen your hassles with all the moving boxes and moving supplies right at your finger tips.

 Another in a series of Quick Moving Guide Tips!!

 Moving Boxes are essential moving tools. 

1. Moving–apple boxes are useful–they have a lid so you don’t have to tape.  Be aware that they may have weaknesses and flaws from leakage – if your items are heavy or delicate, professional moving boxes are a better choice.
    
2. Check with your local pharmacy for boxes. The boxes the vials come in are a useful size for books and most other things.  They often have boxes for small vials divided for glass bottles (you can pack your glasses in there, and smaller knick-knacks).
    
3. We broke down our boxes, stored them flat on the porch (in order of size), out of the way – ran a free ad in the local shopper and sold the whole batch for $50. Keep in mind that they will not stay strong too long – especially in cold or damp areas. 
    
4. While you are bust packing or unpacking, keep the kids occupied by making a “fort” out of one of the bigger size wardrobe or kitchen boxes.  The kids will thank you and you’ll have time to unpack, uninterrupted.
    
5. Boxes at bookstores are a good option.  They are usually small or medium sized boxes and are easy to carry when packed.  Books are heavy and require a heavier and smaller box.  Obviously, bookstores are a decent location to find used ones. 
    
6.  Banana boxes from your grocery store are good options as well.  . They are a good size, the top fits down completely over the bottom and they have handles!

Planning your move thoroughly is a stress reducer.  Today’s tips might better be called MOVING IN ideas, for they are geared to the process once you have arrived.  You’ll need to grab and do most of the following upon arriving at your new home: 

• Supplies for Cleaning:  you know the routine, grab some “fantastic, Ajax and the like and get to work.  No matter how clean the previous owner left it, it’s nice to start fresh.  So grab the Rubber gloves for cleaning the bathroom – generally disgusting places.  Rags and paper towels are essential as well.
   
• Vacuum, broom, mop.  Even if you don’t use them, you will need to know where to put your hands on them as soon as the movers have finished unloading the truck.
   
• Basic kitchen utensils:  Remember we talked previously about marking your boxes well, and perhaps setting some boxes aside to carry with you personally.  This may be one of those boxes…that includes a skillet, pot, coffee pot, and maybe even your crock pot. Then a spatula, sharp knife, silverware, dishwashing liquid, dish towels, paper plates, napkins, and glasses.
   
• Simple food: Another one of “those boxes” with peanut butter, cereal, crackers, bread, coffee, sugar, et cetera.  You may have to make a grocery run for some fruit and snacks for the kids.
   
• Clothing: Also in your possession you will need a couple of changes of clothes for each person in the family; everything from underwear to socks, shoes and pajamas.Personal items: Then you will need a basic bathroom bag. Everyone’s toothbrushes, razor, shampoo, soap, tooth paste and of course toilet paper and towels and wash cloths. Don’t forget your make up, hair dryer and contact stuff. You don’t want be tearing open boxes, hunting for these items when you are getting ready to crash in bed or on mattresses on the floor.
   
• For the first sleep in the new house: Also pack some sheets and blankets for each person’s bed and an alarm clock. This should be just enough to help with camping out, while you are working on getting the new house put together.And: a phone and your packing supply bag, with garbage bags, and your inventory and special labels that you have made for each door way so the movers will know where to put the boxes, without you standing at the front door directing traffic. Let the workmen do the work, so you can start cleaning and unpacking your kitchen as it comes in the door. Especially the food that you may have moved. Of course, if you’re moving frozen food, you will need ice chests to pack it in — I recommend using it all up all your frozen and refrigerated food before the move or giving it to your old neighbors before you leave. I would start over with fresh stuff for your refrigerator. Toss it all out, except the mustard – which doesn’t need to be refrigerated.

Quick tip #1  

• Convenience is important in case of unexpected obstacles, so, Move on a weekday if you can, when banks, utilities and government offices are open.
• Prepare in advance for your arrival at the new home — Order preprinted address labels with your new address as soon as you know it. It makes the change-of-address process much easier.
• Too much information is better than too little:  Keep a utility log to check service-transfer dates. If you’re moving locally, leave the power and water on at your old address a few extra days so you can go back and clean up after your move.
• Piece by piece, a step at at time:  Choose a “packing room” ahead of time and box up a few things each day.

 Make your garage “all it can be!”  – Just like the Marine Corps!

This is the first in a series of articles on organizing and making creative use of your garage.

 Organizing your garage can be a tiresome task for many homeowners.  Like any organizing task, it takes planning to make it efficient – but is well worth the final product.  It seems that the garage is that one place on earth where we all seem to love to be disorganized, however the sooner you get organized, the sooner that that space will become amazingly useful.  When you think about organizing your garage you should keep in mind that this activity is intended  to find a designated place for everything while keeping your goods available for everyday use. The following five steps compromise a simple system for garage organization.

Garage items should be sorted
First of all sort and categorize all the items in your garage, for this you should empty your garage and start sorting everything into categories. Separate the tools from sporting equipment, electric tools, etc. You will realize how much stuff you have and only then you will be able to determine the best ways to organize and store everything. Misplaced items in your garage should be returned to their proper place. Also you should sort the things that should be in the garage from the things that should actually be in the basement, attic or better, sold at a garage sale.  Where possible attempt to recycle everything that you decide to throw away.

Separate seasonal items and equipment
A special rack should be installed to hang bicycles and lawn maintenance tools and to keep them accessible yet out of the way. If it is near winter place snow related tools like snow blowers, ice scrapers, snow shovels and also skis, snowboards and sleds grouped together. Also the items for warm seasons should be stored in a special cabinet. Near the beginning of every season you should plan this activity and rotate the cold and warm items places in the cabinet. For the other sporting equipment, shelves and drawers should be designed.

Additional garage storage space
While organizing you should consider adding additional garage storage space to help you maintain the organization. Shelves and cabinets should be mounted on the walls. The basic principle is to store the items that you use on a regular basis in a way that makes them accessible every time you need them.

Create efficient working area
Installing a bench or a table would be a good choice if you use your garage as a workshop. A sturdy tool chest and a pegboard are great in storing your tools and keeping them easily accessible.  There are multiple opportunities for creativity in this area. 

Reposition trash and recycling containers near the garage
To easily dispose unwanted items from your garage a good idea is to relocate the trash and recycling bins near to your garage entrance. This way you won’t be tempted to keep certain items because the trash bins are too far away – if you’re not going to use it, toss it, or keep another container as the “salvation army” pile. 

Now would be the time to hire a handyman to have cabinets, closets and shelves built right into your garage. Invest in some good storage units as described before and start organizing, sorting and storing.

We all have different styles, but the tips above are a good beginning to a “better garage”.

Rent …The right rental truck!

Are you a convenience junky?  You know, having easy and accessible tools and info available.  As Americans, we are a bit spoiled – OK, maybe a lot spoiled.  How’s that?  Well, we are used to having meals quick – be it via the microwave or McDonald’s,  Burger King and the like and essentially everything in our lives to run at similar speeds.  Bottom line is that we expect things to be efficient, fast and without hassles and we grow VERY impatient if it’s anything less.  It’s no different when we move…we are excited, and we begin packing up our belongings – finding just the right size boxes, and wrapping everything in wrapping paper or stretch wrap or bubble wrap.  We are confident that everything is set perfectly.  That is until we head out on the road – pulling that trailer.  You know the type, big, and bulky and while they fit everything inside that we needed, we didn’t anticipate the “power drain” it would cause on our car when we pulled it.

Which brings me to a pack-up-and-move story…The year was 1985 and finally, I found a woman who could love me (she still does by the way) and I was moving from San Diego, California to Dallas, Texas to get married and attend graduate school.  So I did just what I explained above.  I set out my boxes, wrapped everything up with the finest moving supplies and sealed it all up with the best box tape available. Then, I placed all of it plus my motorcycle in a trailer, hooked it up to my beloved 1979 Cutlass Supreme (I miss that car even today) and headed out across I-40.  Little did I know that I was in for major frustration because while my car did not actually break down, it was too underpowered to pull that trailer.  Yep, there I was cruising along at the relative high speed of 55 mph, listening to The Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, Chicago and other classic rock tunes, when I came up to my first INCLINE not far out of San Diego.  What happened?  Well my 55mph quickly slowed down to 20 or less.     Perhaps you think, “so what?’  Well, that was unfortunately just the first of what may have been hundreds of inclines over the next 1500 miles – it seemed after a while that even a small dip in the road would slow me down.  Not only did my 6 cylinder Cutlass not have enough power (have I mentioned that I really loved that car?) but the trailer acted like a giant dragster parachute, catching every bit of wind form San Diego, across to Flagstaff, Gallup, NM, Amarillo, Texas…all the way till I got to Dallas.  Ohhhh, the emotional pain!!!  At that point,  I was not only extremely impatient, I also began to worry that my transmission would go out or I’d simply kill the motor.  Trust me, I laugh now, but that was a stressful – and now I realize that that experience was an unnecessary hassle. 

How do you move efficiently?

Rent a truck instead!!  And if you need to, pull your car behind you, or get a truck big enough to put all of your belongings AND your car inside.  It may cost a bit more, but with the size and power of today’s Budget rental trucks, you’ll will cruise across every mountain with ease and laugh at all the smaller dips.  So the moral of the story?  Use the right tool – it will do what you need it to do, do it efficiently and give you a of piece of mind…all the while as you cruise down the road listening to your favorite classic rock group!!

I love to pack up and move, don’t you??

Hey, isn’t today a great day to move to a new house?  When you’re in the moving box, moving supplies and rental truck business as I am, it sure seems like there is no better day than – let me see…perhaps right now!  Ok, I realize that that is self -serving so I’ll be more diplomatic:

Whenever you find yourself needing to move to a new home, rent a truck for moving, organize your garage, or find a moving company, I hope that you’ll stop by here and take a look at what we have to offer. 

Tape for boxes for instance:  What a simple yet critical tool when you move.  I remember when we first made an international move, and I found my self in a large room full of medium and large moving boxes, full of everything from clothes and coats to knick knacks, cassette tapes (it was a while ago) and books, which we packed in the small moving boxes due to their weight.  I of course didn’t want anything to get broken, so I first filled the gaps in the boxes with packing peanuts and/or moving - packing paper, closed the lid and started to tape it.  I ran a long piece across the top (sometimes 2 pieces depending on the contents) and then thought it would be even strongest if I also ran some short pieces of tape along each edge but not with the edge , rather the same direction as the tape sealing the middle seam.  Did it work?  Were the boxes secure?  Well, after a long ocean voyage, then off the dock and into the hands of less than gentle dock workers and customs people, the boxes all held up strong.  I did the same type of taping along the bottom as well. 

Here’s the point:  Packing tape is VERY important.  So: find a tape that you like, be it clear, or paper (very thick and easy to use).  Their can be a use for duct tape at times, but it’s not all that easy to work with – forget even considering masking tape for anything other than a quick label ID if needed.  Buy lots of tape – it’s relatively cheap and you don’t want to run out and have to go looking for more.  Then over-tape each box and each seal – especially if you are moving more than across town.  Over-taping will add a lot of security and strength and a lot of piece of mind too.  You’ll simply be glad you did.

Moving may be “a pain” but it doesn’t have to be painful!

PAIN!  It can be everywhere in our lives and sometimes the very things that are supposed to bring us joy, instead bring us pain.  For instance, computers…for the most part, they are designed to make our lives more efficient and perhaps even more fun.  They certainly can be a great tool…..that is until they mess up, or WE mess up using them.  It’s the same way with moving to a new home, or relocating to your new job.  It’s supposed to be an “adventure” – perhaps bring a pay raise, or a bigger and nicer home.  But what about the process of getting there?  Ohhhhh, now some of that can be painful. 

Coming back to the computer for a moment.  The mere fact that you are reading this very post or any other post on this site is a testament to the grace of God.  Why?  Because, not more than an hour ago, while doing some routine file cleanup, I deleted every single article on this site.  THAT hurt!!  Frankly, it’s amazing that I have not done that before now (being the relative technical klutz that I am at times).  But what I was able to do was find the backup files on the server and reload all of them…WHEW, they were just backed up yesterday, so nothing was really lost. 

So, now what about moving?  What if you lost all of your belongings due to faulty or under strength moving boxes?   Or your packing tape failed and the boxes burst open?  Or worst yet, the rental truck or the professional mover company you chose was in an accident with a big-rig and caught on fire.  Ohh, the PAIN that would cause.  It’s not as though you lost your life, but you did just lose your tangible memories and you’ll have to replace everything. 

So what is the moral to this story – WELL, keep fresh backups available for your computer and as it pertains to either moving across the country or across your hometown, be sure to first organize your move well.  Take the time to think through what you need, and choose your packing and shipping products carefully.  While there are few if any guarantees in life or in moving your belongings, good preparation will go a long way toward giving you peace of mind.
