Tips for Organizing Furniture in Your Child’s Bedroom Ahh, the emotional pain of looking into most kid’s bedroom only to find a tremendous mess – their clothes are [..]

Tips for Organizing Furniture in Your Child’s Bedroom

Ahh, the emotional pain of looking into most kid’s bedroom only to find a tremendous mess – their clothes are spread everywhere, toys are stacked on each other, the bed is unmade, and paper – not just assignments from school, but somehow, they have pieces of paper – literally pieces torn off and laying around, for who knows what reason – as though they have a gerbil sharing their room. They so desperately need to get organized!

Have you heard of Feng Shui? It is the Chinese art of positioning various objects. It is founded on the belief that the flow of chi (energy) and the sequence of the yin and yang (balance) create both positive and negative impacts. In fact, the way that you arrange the furniture in your child’s bedroom, will influence how your child uses it. Personally, I don’t buy into the mystical energy aspect (way too new age – without factual basis) but, the outcome often creates a nice layout – and when it comes down to it, whether you use Feng Shui or something else, a get organized plan is always a useful thing to have. And. I will allow that colors, and arrangements do make a difference in our “comfort” level as we walk into a room – if they didn’t, we’d all have white rooms and basic furniture lumped together – and the entire home improvement industry wouldn’t exist.

But for this article, we’ll go with the concept of Feng Shui (without the hocus pocus). After choosing safe and functional furniture, the next step is to properly position the furniture throughout the room, to maximize its attractiveness and functionality. Here are some tips to guide you in the process.

1. Make a plan. Draw a floor plan for the bedroom. Make sure to include where doors, windows, electrical outlets and vents are located. Measure the largest pieces of furniture, such as a bunk bed, and sketch out on a drawing where you intend to position them.

2. Reason for the room. Think about the purpose of the room. Is it a bedroom or a playroom? Also, consider how many children will be using it.

3. Begin with biggies. First, position the biggest pieces of furniture in the room, such as a safe and fun bunk bed. Usually, these pieces should face the focal point of the room.

4. Avoid furniture wallflowers. Do not push all of the furniture so that the pieces are flush with the walls.

5. Small and tall. Mix up the arrangement of the furniture, based on height and size. Avoid placing two small or two tall items beside each other. Instead, position the pair of furniture pieces across from each other.

6. Linear and angular. Create a balance of furniture with straight and curved lines. For example, use a table with curvy legs, and a chair with straight edges.

7. Seats with reach. Tables should always be within easy reach of every seat in the bedroom. Both pieces should also have a comparable scale.

8. Avoid traffic jams. Consider the flow of human traffic in the room, when arranging the furniture. Usually, this flow is located between doorways in the room. Place furniture to allow for a width of 30-48 inches for traffic routes that are major. Likewise, there should be a width of at least 24 inches for minor traffic routes.

9. All clear. Make sure that there is always enough clearance for furniture. There should be at least two feet between the side of the bed, and a wall. Also, there should be a minimum of three feet between the bed and a door that swings.

10. Formal or casual? If your child is serious, it is advisable to use miniature versions of grownup furniture, and to place them in a balanced manner. However, most furniture and themes in a children’s bedroom will be lighter, which requires a more casual arrangements of the furniture.

Whether or not you use Feng Shui in designing your child’s bedroom, finding the right furniture, and arrangement of it, are important considerations when organizing a room, or setting up the furniture and the bunk beds.

So there you have it – a way to relieve stress. What? Yes, I will hold that regardless of the plan you use to get your kid’s rooms organized, it will relieve stress. Getting organized is a powerful stress reducer for both the child (whether they are conscious of it or not – they’ll like a cleaner and more organized room) and for you. Now, if you can just find that gerbil eating all that paper!

The tale of moving boxes, bubblewrap and pig-tails

Well, like most parents, we knew the day would come, and in the next 2-3 months it IS coming. Yes, my daughter will be packing boxes (or will I be packing them? Hmmm!) and moving her stuff to the University of California at Irvine. Yea, she worked hard to get there, she’s scared half to death, but soon she will be off to tackle the (by invitation only) Vocal Performance program, with perhaps a Musical Theatre minor. Ok, enough about her…we all have stories right?

What’s the point? There is no better time than the present to be thinking through your moving needs. How many cardboard moving boxes will your son or daughter need? Bubble wrap too of course, cause then they can entertain themselves and dorm-mates by popping those cute little bubbles for hours when they should be studying. You’ll need box tape, hangers and so much more.

I’m sure you know the routine…just remember to start earlier than you initially expect the process to take. Get organized, and get it all together, then sit back and remember all the fun times – cause these times, “they are a-changing”.

Here’s a good start for you – pick up our free moving guide and start planning.

Our best to you,

When your garage is clean, efficient and organized, you simply feel good. FEEL good? Yes, when you’re garage is a mess, do you feel great? No, of course not. But when your bikes, sports equipment, lawn care tools and the like all are in a place that makes sense, you can walk in the garage and do what you need to do with a minimum of fuss. So, if you’re garage is not organized, consider doing it today.

Driving a moving truck is different…Remember to allow for extra braking room when driving a moving van. Anticipate stops and allow a 3-second gap between you and the vehicle in front of you.

And again, I remind you that the smallest differences can be huge when drinving a rental moving truck…U-Haul moving vans require up to 12 feet of overhead clearance. Watch out for drive-thru restaurant and motel over-hangs.

Some Items are simply too important to NOT keep close by to you…Get Organized and take it with you personally…Items of Personal Importance/Sentimental Value – This third category of non-allowables can create problems should your shipment be delayed or items lost. We suggest that irreplaceable items and\or sentimental items be carried with you instead of being packed with your shipment. Examples include: Airline Tickets Certificates of Deposit Prescription Medicine Car Keys Stocks Computer Discs Cell Phones Bonds Address Books Pagers IRAs Jewelry Laptop Computers Financial Documents Family Photographs Checkbooks Deeds Wedding Albums Cash Car Titles Personal Video Tapes School Records Professional Files VCRs & Stereos Medical & Dental

The big “beasts” in our homes are sometimes a bit overwhelming when it comes time to move. But much like everything else you pack up for moving, you take it step by step. Here’s a good start for you!!

Pack small appliances in original container or a moving box cushioned with Packing Paper. (Do not use shredded paper – it can clog the appliance!)With major appliances, check with the appliance dealer for any special moving instructions. For all large appliances, remove loose fittings and accessories and pack separately. Tie down, tape or wedge all movable parts and doors.Gas Dryer – Have gas company disconnect.

Dishwasher/Washing Machine – Stuff towels between machine sides and tub to keep tub from rotating. Pad exterior well. Disconnect hoses, put in plastic bag, place in tub.

Freezer/Refrigerator – Defrost and dry interiors well. Fill interior spaces with lightweight linens, clothing or stuffed toys. If you want to lay your refrigerator down for moving, check first with the local dealer to determine if your brand can be moved like this. If so, make sure refrigerator stands upright for at least 24 hours before plugging in.

More Suggestions and moving ideas from people who have done it…

GET Organized and get rid of the CLUTTER BEFORE You move!

I gave a way a bunch of my stuff when we last moved. One of the local nonprofit groups with a thrift store had a particular day each week they would come to my zip code. They probably thought I was nuts, but I had them put me on the schedule for weeks- the fellows who picked up the usable items would just laugh when they ended up at my house again! I had a spot in the garage for the upstairs gleaning and a spot in the basement for the downstairs. The men could move just about anything cause they were strong and there were 2-3 of them. They also would come right after I finished my yard sales too. Also, I rented a Budget rental truck. Spending money when I had a perfectly good old pickup truck to haul things with goes against my nature, but l the convenience was great. You can also lock them up and put your bigger items like furniture, old appliances, etc, in there too. Then you can hook the thing back onto your car and drive it to its donation destination! Plus, if you are a penny-pincher like me, as each day passes, you know you are paying to keep the rental truck, so it forces you to make up your mind and get the thing filled, emptied and returned to Budget Rental. I may end up doing this again even without moving because despite paring down a bunch with the move, I still kept too much stuff. For the thrift minded after you move, I have seen people advertise all of their moving boxes for sale for a minimal (compared to new) amount, say $30-50 in the classifieds. I would recommend using good moving boxes though – perhaps you can pick up a few produce type boxes from the store, but in many cases, there is simply no substitute for the real moving boxes, do their their strength ratings and specific sizes for books, kitchen dish packs, and wardrobe boxes.

One thing that helped me tremendously during moving was a timer. At the time I was totally addicted to chatting on BBS (before internet) and it was almost impossible to drag myself away from the keyboard. I started packing early so I’d have plenty of time. I’d allow myself 30 minutes chatting, 30 minutes packing, 30 minutes chatting, 30 minutes packing…. You know how much you can get done in 5, 10, or 15 minutes already… I got most of the non-essentials (books, china, decorations, etc) packed in a very short time and stacked out of the way against a wall. It was one of the easiest moves that I can remember, clutter and all!

At Packupthehouse.com, we specialize in INFORMATION about Moving. And we point you to the best possible resources to enable you to move with ease and efficiency.

Planning your move thoroughly is a stress reducer. Today’s tips might better be called MOVING IN ideas, for they are geared to the process once you have arrived. You’ll need to grab and do most of the following upon arriving at your new home:

Supplies for Cleaning: you know the routine, grab some “fantastic, Ajax and the like and get to work. No matter how clean the previous owner left it, it’s nice to start fresh. So grab the Rubber gloves for cleaning the bathroom – generally disgusting places. Rags and paper towels are essential as well.

Vacuum, broom, mop. Even if you don’t use them, you will need to know where to put your hands on them as soon as the movers have finished unloading the truck. Boxes at a Discount

Basic kitchen utensils: Remember we talked previously about marking your boxes well, and perhaps setting some boxes aside to carry with you personally. This may be one of those boxes…that includes a skillet, pot, coffee pot, and maybe even your crock pot. Then a spatula, sharp knife, silverware, dishwashing liquid, dish towels, paper plates, napkins, and glasses.

Simple food: Another one of “those boxes” with peanut butter, cereal, crackers, bread, coffee, sugar, et cetera. You may have to make a grocery run for some fruit and snacks for the kids.

Clothing: Also in your possession you will need a couple of changes of clothes for each person in the family; everything from underwear to socks, shoes and pajamas.Personal items: Then you will need a basic bathroom bag. Everyone’s toothbrushes, razor, shampoo, soap, tooth paste and of course toilet paper and towels and wash cloths. Don’t forget your make up, hair dryer and contact stuff. You don’t want be tearing open boxes, hunting for these items when you are getting ready to crash in bed or on mattresses on the floor.

For the first sleep in the new house: Also pack some sheets and blankets for each person’s bed and an alarm clock. This should be just enough to help with camping out, while you are working on getting the new house put together. And: a phone and your packing supply bag, with garbage bags, and your inventory and special labels that you have made for each door way so the movers will know where to put the boxes, without you standing at the front door directing traffic. Let the workmen do the work, so you can start cleaning and unpacking your kitchen as it comes in the door. Especially the food that you may have moved. Of course, if you’re moving frozen food, you will need ice chests to pack it in — I recommend using it all up all your frozen and refrigerated food before the move or giving it to your old neighbors before you leave. I would start over with fresh stuff for your refrigerator. Toss it all out, except the mustard – which doesn’t need to be refrigerated.

Supplies are important for your move…here is the first in a list of the supplies that you’ll want to have in hand. For every recipe, you need a list of ingredients. So think about what you are going to use for the job.

Packing Supplies

Boxes: These can be purchased at a moving supply company. You can also go to liquor stores for their boxes. Keep in mind that you do not need to get huge boxes, because they will be too hard to lift when filled. So keep them manageable.Packing Tape: Be sure and get plenty of tape to seal the box top flaps. It is not that expensive and is worth having enough so you don’t have to stop and run out an buy more. Also get the dispensers to hold the tape and have more than one if there will be more people helping pack.
