I can see the signs…Summer time is coming to a close – much to my dislike.  At least the part of summer that is carefree without school in the mix.

Rent …The right rental truck!

Are you a convenience junky?  You know, having easy and accessible tools and info available.  As Americans, we are a bit spoiled – OK, maybe a lot spoiled.  How’s that?  Well, we are used to having meals quick – be it via the microwave or McDonald’s,  Burger King and the like and essentially everything in our lives to run at similar speeds.  Bottom line is that we expect things to be efficient, fast and without hassles and we grow VERY impatient if it’s anything less.  It’s no different when we move…we are excited, and we begin packing up our belongings – finding just the right size boxes, and wrapping everything in wrapping paper or stretch wrap or bubble wrap.  We are confident that everything is set perfectly.  That is until we head out on the road – pulling that trailer.  You know the type, big, and bulky and while they fit everything inside that we needed, we didn’t anticipate the “power drain” it would cause on our car when we pulled it.

Which brings me to a pack-up-and-move story…The year was 1985 and finally, I found a woman who could love me (she still does by the way) and I was moving from San Diego, California to Dallas, Texas to get married and attend graduate school.  So I did just what I explained above.  I set out my boxes, wrapped everything up with the finest moving supplies and sealed it all up with the best box tape available. Then, I placed all of it plus my motorcycle in a trailer, hooked it up to my beloved 1979 Cutlass Supreme (I miss that car even today) and headed out across I-40.  Little did I know that I was in for major frustration because while my car did not actually break down, it was too underpowered to pull that trailer.  Yep, there I was cruising along at the relative high speed of 55 mph, listening to The Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, Chicago and other classic rock tunes, when I came up to my first INCLINE not far out of San Diego.  What happened?  Well my 55mph quickly slowed down to 20 or less.     Perhaps you think, “so what?’  Well, that was unfortunately just the first of what may have been hundreds of inclines over the next 1500 miles – it seemed after a while that even a small dip in the road would slow me down.  Not only did my 6 cylinder Cutlass not have enough power (have I mentioned that I really loved that car?) but the trailer acted like a giant dragster parachute, catching every bit of wind form San Diego, across to Flagstaff, Gallup, NM, Amarillo, Texas…all the way till I got to Dallas.  Ohhhh, the emotional pain!!!  At that point,  I was not only extremely impatient, I also began to worry that my transmission would go out or I’d simply kill the motor.  Trust me, I laugh now, but that was a stressful – and now I realize that that experience was an unnecessary hassle. 

How do you move efficiently?

Rent a truck instead!!  And if you need to, pull your car behind you, or get a truck big enough to put all of your belongings AND your car inside.  It may cost a bit more, but with the size and power of today’s Budget rental trucks, you’ll will cruise across every mountain with ease and laugh at all the smaller dips.  So the moral of the story?  Use the right tool – it will do what you need it to do, do it efficiently and give you a of piece of mind…all the while as you cruise down the road listening to your favorite classic rock group!!

 Do you plan to move yourself – a true do it yourself approach?

The first step is a big one:  locate all your moving supplies, packing tape, bubble wrap, and find just the right boxes.  Be they heavy duty for dishes and computers or specialty boxes for lamps and wardrobe.  Then it’s getting that moving truck.  There are many moving truck companies you can choose to rent from. This term normally refers to the household goods packing, moving and storage services provided by local and long distance professional moving companies in a state or country. In some locales such a company is referred to as a removalist. Long distance moving companies provide interstate moving services and local movers provide intrastate moves or moves within the same state. Household goods movers are regulated by the US Department of Transportation and licensed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

More than one rental truck company

Let us first take a look at Budget Truck Rental. When you rent a truck from Budget Truck Rental, you have control of your goods and belongings. With a traditional van line or portable storage unit, all of your belongings are under their control of a company, who may not treat your goods or belongings with the same care and consideration you would. You should get an employee to make note of all existing cosmetic damage, in the exterior and interior of the truck and to write a description of the damage on your contract. This ensures that you are not held responsible for any costs for the aforementioned damage. It is also a good idea to check that everything works correctly, and that you familiarize yourself with the truck.

Be sure to check the following:  the brakes, the headlights and turn signals for working order; the windshield wipers, electric windows, audio and heating systems for proper functionality; the tire pressure, fluid (oil/water) and gas levels; and the availability of an owner’s manual for the truck.

Ask for the contact number in the event of an accident or a breakdown (some companies will offer roadside assistance). Also ask what sort documentation is necessary to use as registration and to prove your right to drive the truck.

There are several ways to deal with the gasoline charges. Be aware that the rental companies will charge you inflated rates for the gas usage. Always make sure to fill the tank yourself before returning the rental truck. 

Truck rental is a task that need not be a daunting one – do a little homework, and get started.
