Remember that I told you that my daughter is off to college soon and that we need to get moving boxes moving supplies and we certainly need to get her organized? Well, even if you don’t remember, she is and we are – in fact we head down today to UC-Irvine for her orientation.  She won’t actually move her boxes for another 6 weeks, but this is the begining.

So, as a quick reminder to you, if you have a friend, daughter, or relative about to move to school and they need a wardrobe box or some packing tape, remind them to plan ahead – and we do hope you’ll point them our direction – for both informative articles and as much bubble wrap and moving supplies that they could ever hope to find.

• Driving a moving truck is different…Remember to allow for extra braking room when driving a moving van. Anticipate stops and allow a 3-second gap between you and the vehicle in front of you.
• And again, I remind you that the smallest differences can be huge when drinving a rental moving truck…U-Haul moving vans require up to 12 feet of overhead clearance. Watch out for drive-thru restaurant and motel over-hangs.
• Some Items are simply too important to NOT keep close by to you…Get Organized and take it with you personally…Items of Personal Importance/Sentimental Value – This third category of non-allowables can create problems should your shipment be delayed or items lost. We suggest that irreplaceable items and\or sentimental items be carried with you instead of being packed with your shipment. The big “beasts” in our homes are sometimes a bit overwhelming when it comes time to move. But much like everything else you pack up for moving, you take it step by step. Here’s a good start for you!!

Pack small appliances in original container or a moving box cushioned with Packing Paper. (Do not use shredded paper – it can clog the appliance!)With major appliances, check with the appliance dealer for any special moving instructions. For all large appliances, remove loose fittings and accessories and pack separately. Tie down, tape or wedge all movable parts and doors.Gas Dryer – Have gas company disconnect.

Dishwasher/Washing Machine – Stuff towels between machine sides and tub to keep tub from rotating. Pad exterior well. Disconnect hoses, put in plastic bag, place in tub.

Freezer/Refrigerator – Defrost and dry interiors well. Fill interior spaces with lightweight linens, clothing or stuffed toys. If you want to lay your refrigerator down for moving, check first with the local dealer to determine if your brand can be moved like this. If so, make sure refrigerator stands upright for at least 24 hours before plugging in.

GET Organized and get rid of the CLUTTER BEFORE You move!

1. I gave a way a bunch of my stuff when we last moved. One of the local nonprofit groups with a thrift store had a particular day each week they would come to my zip code. They probably thought I was nuts, but I had them put me on the schedule for weeks- the fellows who picked up the usable items would just laugh when they ended up at my house again! I had a spot in the garage for the upstairs gleaning and a spot in the basement for the downstairs. The men could move just about anything cause they were strong and there were 2-3 of them. They also would come right after I finished my yard sales too.Also, I rented a Budget rental truck. Spending money when I had a perfectly good old pickup truck to haul things with goes against my nature, but l the convenience was great. You can also lock them up and put your bigger items like furniture, old appliances, etc, in there too. Then you can hook the thing back onto your car and drive it to its donation destination! Plus, if you are a penny-pincher like me, as each day passes, you know you are paying to keep the rental truck, so it forces you to make up your mind and get the thing filled, emptied and returned to Budget Rental. I may end up doing this again even without moving because despite paring down a bunch with the move, I still kept too much stuff. For the thrift minded after you move, I have seen people advertise all of their moving boxes for sale for a minimal (compared to new) amount, say $30-50 in the classifieds. I would recommend using good moving boxes though – perhaps you can pick up a few produce type boxes from the store, but in many cases, there is simply no substitute for the real moving boxes, do their their strength ratings and specific sizes for books, kitchen dish packs, and wardrobe boxes.
2. One thing that helped me tremendously during moving was a timer. At the time I was totally addicted to chatting on BBS (before internet) and it was almost impossible to drag myself away from the keyboard. I started packing early so I’d have plenty of time. I’d allow myself 30 minutes chatting, 30 minutes packing, 30 minutes chatting, 30 minutes packing…. You know how much you can get done in 5, 10, or 15 minutes already… I got most of the non-essentials (books, china, decorations, etc) packed in a very short time and stacked out of the way against a wall. It was one of the easiest moves that I can remember, clutter and all!

Planning your move thoroughly is a stress reducer. Today’s tips might better be called MOVING IN ideas, for they are geared to the process once you have arrived. You’ll need to grab and do most of the following upon arriving at your new home:

• Supplies for Cleaning: you know the routine, grab some “fantastic, Ajax and the like and get to work. No matter how clean the previous owner left it, it’s nice to start fresh. So grab the Rubber gloves for cleaning the bathroom – generally disgusting places. Rags and paper towels are essential as well.
• Vacuum, broom, mop. Even if you don’t use them, you will need to know where to put your hands on them as soon as the movers have finished unloading the truck. Boxes at a Discount
• Basic kitchen utensils: Remember we talked previously about marking your boxes well, and perhaps setting some boxes aside to carry with you personally. This may be one of those boxes…that includes a skillet, pot, coffee pot, and maybe even your crock pot. Then a spatula, sharp knife, silverware, dishwashing liquid, dish towels, paper plates, napkins, and glasses.
• Simple food: Another one of “those boxes” with peanut butter, cereal, crackers, bread, coffee, sugar, et cetera. You may have to make a grocery run for some fruit and snacks for the kids.
• Clothing: Also in your possession you will need a couple of changes of clothes for each person in the family; everything from underwear to socks, shoes and pajamas.Personal items: Then you will need a basic bathroom bag. Everyone’s toothbrushes, razor, shampoo, soap, tooth paste and of course toilet paper and towels and wash cloths. Don’t forget your make up, hair dryer and contact stuff. You don’t want be tearing open boxes, hunting for these items when you are getting ready to crash in bed or on mattresses on the floor.
• For the first sleep in the new house: Also pack some sheets and blankets for each person’s bed and an alarm clock. This should be just enough to help with camping out, while you are working on getting the new house put together.And: a phone and your packing supply bag, with garbage bags, and your inventory and special labels that you have made for each door way so the movers will know where to put the boxes, without you standing at the front door directing traffic. Let the workmen do the work, so you can start cleaning and unpacking your kitchen as it comes in the door. Especially the food that you may have moved. Of course, if you’re moving frozen food, you will need ice chests to pack it in — I recommend using it all up all your frozen and refrigerated food before the move or giving it to your old neighbors before you leave. I would start over with fresh stuff for your refrigerator. Toss it all out, except the mustard – which doesn’t need to be refrigerated.

Supplies are important for your move…here is the first in a list of the supplies that you’ll want to have in hand. For every recipe, you need a list of ingredients. So think about what you are going to use for the job.

Packing Supplies

• Boxes: These can be purchased at a moving supply company. You can also go to liquor stores for their boxes. Keep in mind that you do not need to get huge boxes, because they will be too hard to lift when filled. So keep them manageable.Packing Tape: Be sure and get plenty of tape to seal the box top flaps. It is not that expensive and is worth having enough so you don’t have to stop and run out an buy more. Also get the dispensers to hold the tape and have more than one if there will be more people helping pack.

Starting the packing up process

Now, back to packing. If you will take your time and not be rushed about this, you will do a more efficient job and not be so stressed out. The key to getting it done and done right (and safely for the items you’re moving) is consistency – in fact we’ll call it “Focused consistency.” That is what wins the race. Not rushing through it and forgetting something which later causes a problem.

Planning ahead for your move is ideal. Are you being transferred to a new job and you have a timeline to work by? If you have plenty of time to prepare for the move, you can have your moving boxes labeled and ready to load on the truck, all before the final day. No stress and no worry. AND, once you arrive, because you took the time to get organized before you moved, you’ll easily find what you need even if you’re needing to live out of those boxes for a few days. Take small steps and each day pack up 5 boxes and keep them in the room that they belong in. Color Code the boxes and number them. Label on the outside the contents or which drawer they came from and put it on your master moving list. Get a clip board and keep everything together or a zip up notebook or canvas bag to hold all your markers and supplies. Keep your moving supplies together.

The last stress relieving tip for today: Give thought to what you’ll be needing once you walk in the door of your new home. Perhaps put those items in a particular box or boxes – like you often do when you travel – in case the airlines lose your luggage. Circumstances may require that you live out of a few boxes, so know where it all is, and you’ll greatly reduce your stress.

Begin in one room, be systematic, create a plan and stay with that plan. Each room is different, so adjust your plan accordingly. Pick up an item and ask yourself:

• Are you worth keeping and moving?
• Is this item REALLY important enough to go to all this trouble and expense to pack up?

You are going to be so surprised, at how many items you can actually do without. This is the key to getting the house ready for your move.

Only keep the stuff you absolutely love and use just quite regularly.

Get rid of all the clothes you don’t wear, and try to only keep the “keepsakes” and memorabilia that REALLY are keepsakes. We all have a lot of items that may remind us of a small event, or our college apartment or the like, but is THAT really an important memory? It may be, if so, keep it, but if it’s just a memory without real significance, then get rid of it and move on.
